The Royal English Opera House (as it was then known) was opened by Richard D'Oyly Carte in January 1891 with Arthur Sullivan's 'Ivanhoe', closing in July after an unsuccessful run of only 160 performances. By the end of the following year, the theatre had changed hands and was renamed the Palace Theatre of Varieties.
