Singin In The Rain - Theatre Breaks
Singin’ in the Rain is a great ‘feel good’ musical to banish all our worries and cares in this difficult time of cuts and doom & gloom. No one could be miserable after watch this show! It has all the great tunes we remember from the film and even the fabulous dance sequence.
I can’t resist it I’m going to have to share the youtube of the very affectionate Morcambe and Wise parody of the classic film. I dare you not to crack a smile!

The sight of the colourful umbrellas that decorate the outside of the theatre give you the first clue that this is going to be a splendid evening of entertainment with just the right retro feel. We are going to the fantasy land itself, Hollywood just as the talkies come in. We meet glamourous but ruthless starlets with voices that go straight though you who can’t sing, dance or even act who suddenly find they have to break into spontaneous song and dance routines. Of course there are the good guys too, some stunning visual effects, great dance routines and plenty of laughs and love.
I thought you might enjoy this clip of Good Morning from the film just to get a flavour of what the stage show is like:
Of course live theatre is never the same as a film. It is much, much, better! In the theatre we can get totally wrapped up in the lives of the characters and suspend our disbelief in a way that just isn’t possible even in the best film. (and Singing in the Rain is certainly one of the all time best musical films!)
Singing in the Rain is a perfect choice for a romantic theatre break. It has a lovely romantic plot of the classic guy meets girl, huge misunderstandings all round, happy ending kind. It is a wonderful piece of romantic musical comedy fluff that will have you dancing out of the theatre, and singing in the shower the next morning. I’d recommend arriving in London early, maybe even try to sneak in an extra night on your theatre breaks package. Lots of the packages include an extra night so if you have the time, it turns a rushed stay onto a real break and lets you fit in some sight seeing, shopping and maybe even an extra show! My main advice about the hotel you choose it to get something central. I know that the out of London hotels look tempting but really the extra travelling time cuts out too much of your stay. Nobody wants to be navigating the tube back to the outskirts of London after a show. It just isn’t fun!
Alternatively, if you want the freedom of having your own car you could try a self drive or coach based theatre breaks package. These are usually for two nights (or even three!) and often include extras like a dinner dance on the second night. They tend to be based in out of London hotels but this is much less of an issue because a coach takes you right to the theatre and picks you up again afterwards. Have a look at our Readers Offers page and see if you are tempted.
