Deathtrap

Deathtrap at the Noel Coward Theatre Deathtrap The Play Yesterday I wrote a glowing review for the revival of Ira Lewin’s comedy thriller Deathtrap at the Noel Coward Theatre. But when I read it back, I thought how unexciting it was compared to the play! So I thought maybe I’d do something a little different. Instead of a written review, here’s a quick audioboo file in which I talk about the play, it’s less than 5 minutes long, and a bit more interesting perhaps?

New Season Theatre Breaks In London
http://theatrebreaksinlondon.co.uk/100/new-season-theatre-breaks-in-london/
The first of a new season of plays and musicals for theatre breaks in London opened last night at the Noel Coward theatre in London’s St Martin’s Lane. The play is called “Deathtrap” and it’s a revival of a comedy thriller that was hugely successful on Broadway in the 1970s and 1980s. Later in the autumn there will quite a few new plays being staged in and around London’s West End and there are some remarkable events on the musicals scene as well. For example, you may have heard that Whoopi Goldberg was sadly forced to abandon Sister Act recently due ultimately to a bereavement. Well she’s back for five nights later in October, so if you’ve always fancied seeing Whoopi live on the West End Stage then you could organise theatre breaks in London around those dates. Hang on, I’ll go get them for you … “Goldberg, who left the musical after learning that her mother had fallen ill in the US, will star in five shows between October 22 and October 25 at the London Palladium”. After those dates, the theatre will be dark in preparation for The Wizard of Oz. The Noel Coward Theatre in London

The Proclaimers – the musical
http://theatrebreaksinlondon.co.uk/80/the-proclaimers-the-musical/
Sunshine on Leith the Proclaimers musical is back! It first appeared at Dundee Rep in 2007 and then toured. The show was very well received. Billy Boyd, (the only recorded Scots Hobbit, he played Pippin in the Lord of the Rings films!), will join a tour of Dundee Rep’s revival of its award-winning musical, Sunshine on Leith, opening on August 31. Based around the songs of the Proclaimers the show was written by Stephen Greenhorn. According to the Stage: Glasgow-born Boyd will star as Davy, a squaddie returning to Leith with his best pal after they have experienced one too-many tours of Afghanistan. The Rep’s artistic director James Brinning will direct, with musical direction by Hilary Brooks and design by Neil Warmington.
After opening in Dundee on August 31 the production will tour Scotland and Ireland to October 23. Dates have been booked in England until November 27 with further dates to be announced. Will the Proclaimer’s musical make it to London? I certainly hope so. I’m a fan of their song writing skills and I think they’ve better credentials than many who’ve found their way onto the London scene recently. As Bernard Logan said in his 2007 review: Sunshine on Leith Abba, Queen, Madness … the Proclaimers?! Well, why not? Dundee Rep’s much-hyped new ‘jukebox musical’ lets others discover what we devotees have long argued: that the Reid brothers are the best songwriters in Britain. The uninitiated will still enjoy a show that hijacks the band’s music to tell the story of two squaddies returning to Leith from Iraq. But I love the Proclaimers so much, my heart wears NHS specs, and to me, this is absolute bliss.

The Wizard of Oz 1939
http://wizardofozlondon.co.uk/19/the-wizard-of-oz-1939/
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! This trailer is from the mid-50s when they tried to edit the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie for widescreen, but the colour is orginal I think.
What a remarkable film it was for its time, and how appropriate to be making a stage revival in 2010 of all years.
